Keeping Faith in Turbulent Times

We’re living in a time where the world around us feels like constant chaos and turbulence. It’s in times like these that faith can be a source of strength, but also one of our biggest challenges.

Faith requires courage and practice. We don’t usually see faith as an act of courage, yet it is. Sometimes it’s the courage to explore what you knew and allow your current circumstances to strengthen what you’ve believed, even take you to a deeper level of faith. Like all of your life, developing a deeper faith needs to be considered a dynamic process.

Turbulent times will test us. They will cause us to question our faith and beliefs. Don’t consider this a sign of weakness, but more of a moment in your journey. Here’s a closer look at keeping your faith alive and making active choices

Limit Your Exposure

Given the rapid pace at which everything around us is changing, staying informed is important. We’ve all been victims of doom-scrolling and understand how easy it is to get down that rabbit hole of the news. Especially in times of stress, it’s natural to want to increase awareness.

Unfortunately, being on the 24-hour news reel can make you feel worse. We rarely come across happy stories that restore our faith. If you need to watch the news or scroll on social media, do so sparingly. Assign a set time for such activity and don’t stay too long.

Focus on What You Can Influence

Sometimes, it even feels like we can’t control our thoughts. However, we can have more influence in our lives that we know. In the New Testament we are given great advice in Philippians chapter 4 verses 6-8. It basically says to not be anxious about anything by being thankful and tell God your problems. (No need to hide what’s happening)  After that, focus on whatever is noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable. Doing this helps us get out of the catastrophic thinking which actually helps lift our mood.

Reflect on Gratefulness

In times of turbulence, it’s easy to focus on the negatives. It surrounds us and can be a uniting factor. Misery does love company after all.

Attempt to change this habit. Spend time regularly reflecting on the things you’re grateful for. Shifting focus from problems and negatives to something more positive can give way to hope. Also reflect on the things you were able to contribute to. You are not helpless. Every little act of kindness and generosity influences you and those around you. Allow yourself to be pleased that you were able to participate in life. Especially be grateful for God’s presence in your life and how He has shown Himself to you and to others.

Practice Mindfulness

Uncertainty can leave you feeling a loss of control. When these feelings start to pile on, anxiety occurs. Anxiety and stress can be a challenging factor to your faith.

Engaging in mindfulness practices can help you stay grounded throughout the process. Activities like journaling, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, and deep breathing exercises are key to warding off stress when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Use your mindfulness practices to make you aware of God’s presence even when you don’t feel Him near you. He promises to always be with us. One verse I enjoy is from Deuteronomy 31:8 “Do not be afraid or discouraged for the Lord will personally go ahead of you.”

Build Connection

Use your support system wisely when you’re struggling. Don’t be afraid to share your feelings with people you trust. Friends, family, or even support group members can offer you a network to lean on when your faith is wavering.

Together, you can help build each other up, offer guidance, and receive an outside perspective. Knowing that you’re not alone can help nurture your faith.

Engage in Meaningful Activity

Loss of faith can stem from a loss of purpose. Spend time participating in activities that bring you joy. Get involved! The old adage “think globally, act locally” is perfect. Through action, we can foster a sense of hope and create the positive change we want to see in the world.

Focus your energy on volunteer work. Explore creative interests. Make sure you spend time with God by reading His Word, and praying. Make sure that you focus on His good qualities rather than your suffering.

Seek Professional Support

Going through times like this can leave any of us feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Adding confusion to the mix only compounds the negative emotions. It’s important to remember two things. This turbulence is temporary, and you have blessings in your life.
